Tammy Hodges - Makers University Creative and Business Coach

Welcome to The Makers University

I’m Coach Tammy!

My life hasn’t always been easy, but it has been worth it. I tell that to people every day. I grew up in a small town in southern Missouri. Ironically, I grew up next door to a flower shop for a time. I learned how to love fresh flowers, especially the smell of mums and eucalyptus. I also got my first taste of a hand bow by watching Miss Betty whip one out in no time to put on a funeral spray. I was mesmerized. I was always the kid that wanted the seasonal cling ons from the grocery store instead of a candy bar. I loved to seasonally decorate and I always have.

My business, Polka Dot Wreath Co. is a complete fluke. I say that honestly but with a grin on my face. We were stationed at Fort Bragg while my husband was in the Army. He was deployed and I decided to go to a local craft store. They had wreaths everywhere for the Halloween season and I fell in love with deco mesh that day. I was hooked from that moment on and my love affair with deco mesh began that day in North Carolina. I came home and made several that month and one of them went on my front door.

A few days later, a knock came at my front door and there stood a soldier in PT clothes (exercise clothes) wanting to know where I got my wreath because his wife wanted one. I told him if he gave me $20 for the supplies, I would make him one too. That started the business of Polka Dot Wreath Co., I just didn’t know it yet.

My degree is actually in Education. I graduated from Drury University with a major in History and minor in Secondary Education. I had zero intentions of ever crafting for a living. However, after my husband was injured in Afghanistan we came home to the Ozarks again in 2013. We were living and scraping by. We spent our days going to doctors appointments and treatments and I could not take a contract job through a school district because I needed too much time off. We were barely making ends meet, and I mean barely.

That August a former neighbor and soldier from Ft. Bragg emailed me on Facebook to see if I could make them a new wreath as they had moved to a new location in Colorado. From that one day until a week later, the flood gates of orders started piling in. I went to the State and got legal at the end of August and signed up for every single craft show I could because, suddenly, I could do that from home AND make money. Quickly.

I wasn’t always very good at it, but I was consistent and I became pretty well known locally at the craft shows and after that first year, the promoters were emailing me asking me to come back because people were asking if I was going to be there. My wreath business saved us from being homeless, quite literally. Fast forward, seven years later and I have grown to 80,000 followers on Facebook and a six figure business. I adore the people I have surrounded myself with and the wreath community in general. I always knew I would teach in some capacity forever. I prayed when I could not go back to a middle school and live my first love, teaching. I prayed that God would still allow me to teach. I thought it would be online school or online tutoring Missouri History or something. Never in my wildest dreams, did I think he had this plan to let me teach other creatives to work from home, and live their best lives as well. I am so thrilled and excited for this journey and cannot wait to see where it leads each of us.
